National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi
National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi is one of the premier art galleries which functions under the Ministry of Culture of India. The gallery was established in 1949. Inauguration of NGMA was done under the regime of prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and art lovers and a group of artists on 29 March 1954. Butterfly shaped building with a dome in the centre was constructed in 1936.
The inauguration was done by an exhibition of sculptures. Prominent sculptors of that specific time like Ramkinkar Baij, Sankho Chaudhuri, Dhanraj Bhagat and other took part in the exhibition. The first curator of the gallery was Herman Goetz which was a noted German art historian. Gallery has two branches one is in Mumbai and the other one is Banguluru. Gallery has exhibited several different exhibitions which shows the transition of art making throughout one hundred and fifty years. NGMA has a wide and marvellous collection of modern and contemporary art.
 some of the objectives of the National Gallery of Modern Art are to acquire the works of modern art from the start of the gallery to contemporary art, organizing and developing galleries for permanent display and exhibitions. Gallery also organizes exhibition outside the country. NGMA has also taken initiative to organize seminars, conferences to encourage the students and artists.
